One of the most remote destinations on earth, the Azores are a far-flung archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

The ruggedly beautiful islands are the exposed tips of underwater mountains and are home to impossibly blue lakes, lush green forest, deep caverns and bubbling springs bringing heated water from deep beneath the surface. Just five per cent of the island are developed, making for an untouched paradise. Discovered in the 15^th century, the Azores are an autonomous region of Portugal, and have a rich and unique culture.

One of the best ways to discover these little-visited islands is on two wheels. DuVine Cycling + Adventure Co has recently launched a five-night tour of Sao Miguel Island, the largest and most populous of the group. Discover the island’s myriad landscapes by bike, including volcanic vistas, tropical waterfalls, vibrant wildflowers, and unusually lush coastal roads. Go whale and dolphin watching on a Zodiac, taste tea from a 120-year-old organic plantation, and eat dinner in an ancestral family home.

Along the way, guests will sample local produce and culinary specialties like grilled limpets (sea snails), cheeses, fruits and steam-cooked Furnas stew called cozido, washed down with local wines. Pedal on top of the range bikes with a full support crew before spending the night in charming boutique hotels.
