Domaine des Etangs
Live out your French rural escape fantasies at the new Domaine des Etangs, a medieval chateau turned exclusive boutique hotel. It’s a place of art, Michelin-starred food and holistic wellness.
Dating back to the 11th century, the chateau began life as the fief of the knights of Chasteigner de la Roche-Posay. Most recently, it was the holiday house of a wealthy French industrialist and his daughter who is behind the seven-year transformation.
Set on a 2,500-acre estate, there are 29 rooms, a Michelin-starred restaurant, an outdoor heated pool, floating tennis court, a vast children’s playground, ornamental gardens, and paintings by Picasso and Matisse hanging on the walls. Much of the food in the restaurant comes from the on-site garden and wild mushrooms are foraged in the woods.
Guests can play the pianos, look at the stars through telescopes or dress up in costumes kept in the attic playroom. There are yoga and Pilates classes, wine tasting, historical tours of the chateau and wildlife spotting in the grounds. For something even more special, the expert team can create personalised experiences like romantic picnics and dinners created from all local ingredients.
